The time when\u00a0”singing red songs\u201d (\u5531\u7ea2\u6b4c)\u00a0was considered to ”fill us with enthusiasm and unbounded confidence”<\/a>\u00a0(\u6fc0\u60c5\u6ee1\u6000\u3001\u4fe1\u5fc3\u767e\u500d)\u00a0is over for this time. Many people thought that time passed already in the 1970s. As much as Bo Xilai dismissed as ”complete nonsense” (\u65e0\u7a3d\u4e4b\u8c08) the claims that ”red songs” were ”leftist” and a way back to ”the Cultural Revolution”, he was himself dismissed from the politburo (\u653f\u6cbb\u5c40). His wife Gu Kailai<\/a> (\u8c37\u5f00\u6765) is under investigation for murder on British businessman Neil Haywood<\/a>\u00a0(\u5c3c\u5c14\u00b7\u6d77\u4f0d\u5fb7), along with Zhang Xiaojun (\u5f20\u6653\u519b), an aide to the Bo family. These recent events could have been a novel plot by Qiu Xiaolong<\/a> (\u88d8\u5c0f\u9f99) \u2013 or maybe a chapter in Wang Lixiong’s China Tidal Wave<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(\u9ec4\u7978<\/a>) \u2013 but it is for real. The question now is if these events will cause any political tsunami (\u6d77\u5578) for China.<\/p>\n

The Wang Lijun case could have functioned as a kind of ”tsunami warning system” for the top party leaders, and maybe it did give them time to stop some rumours<\/a> (\u8c23\u8a00), and prevent a few people from escaping. Things seemed a little out of hand, however. These events show how vulnerable the party-state is, even its top leadership, despite all the control mechanisms.<\/p>\n

Official media now talks about justice and discipline, and gives an\u00a0idealized image of how the legal system works<\/a>: ”Our country is a socialist country ruled by law, and the respect for law and the status of the law cannot be trampled. No matter who it involves, if you offend the law, you must be dealt with in accordance with the law” (\u6211\u56fd\u662f\u793e\u4f1a\u4e3b\u4e49\u6cd5\u6cbb\u56fd\u5bb6\uff0c\u6cd5\u5f8b\u7684\u5c0a\u4e25\u548c\u6743\u5a01\u4e0d\u5bb9\u8df5\u8e0f\u3002\u4e0d\u8bba\u6d89\u53ca\u5230\u8c01\uff0c\u53ea\u8981\u89e6\u72af\u6cd5\u5f8b\uff0c\u90fd\u5c06\u4f9d\u6cd5\u5904\u7406).\u00a0This is especially interesting in the PRC, where the constitution<\/a> defines the special role of the Communist Party to lead and guide the Chinese society, including the improvement of ”the socialist legal system”.<\/p>\n

Things must be rather shaky now with preparations for the 18th party congress this autumn, and the next politburo meeting should perhaps start with a new song called ”The East is shaking” (\u4e1c\u65b9\u6447)? ”\u4e1c\u65b9\u6447\u3001\u592a\u9633\u5347\u3001\u4e2d\u56fd\u51fa\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u8584\u7199\u6765\u2026\u201d Trustworthy sources tell me that such singing fills you with ”enthusiasm and unbounded confidence”. ”Shaking” is also a homophone of ”rumour” (\u8c23) in Chinese…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
