Former Chongqing vice mayor and police chief Wang Lijun (\u738b\u7acb\u519b) was sentenced to fifteen years in prison<\/a> yesterday for ”bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe-taking” (\u5f87\u79c1\u6789\u6cd5\u3001\u53db\u9003\u3001\u6ee5\u7528\u804c\u6743\u3001\u53d7\u8d3f). A detailed\u00a0account of the trial<\/a> was also published by the official news agency Xinhua. Without mentioning him by name, only by position, it was revealed during the trial that Bo Xilai had literally ear slapped Wang Lijun when he told Bo of his wife Gu Kailai’s alleged involvement in the killing of British businessman Neil Heywood. How will Bo Xilai be punsihed for that \u2013 or will he? Hopefully\u00a0People’s Daily\u00a0<\/em>offspring Global Times <\/em>is right when saying<\/a> ”\u2026 justice will eventually trump over any privilege”.<\/p>\n

Actually, Wang Lijun got several sentences of seven, nine and two years, that would combine to 20 years in prison, but he was instead given a total of fifteen years, and one year deprivation of political rights. It is likely that his revealing of facts around the Bo-Gu affair helped reduce his sentence.<\/p>\n

Besides the bizarre setting of the whole case, it gives some perspective to Chinese criminal punishment. In 2009 Uyghur Christian Alimjan Yimit<\/a> (\u963f\u91cc\u6728\u6c5f\u00b7\u4f9d\u7c73\u63d0) was also sentenced to fifteen years in prison for ”illegally revealing state secrets to a foreigner” (\u5411\u5883\u5916\u4eba\u5458\u975e\u6cd5\u63d0\u4f9b\u56fd\u5bb6\u79d8\u5bc6). He had told his American friend of the pressure he received from the local religious affairs office. Is that a state secret? In 2010 Uyghur journalist Gheyret Niyaz<\/a>\u00a0(\u6d77\u83b1\u63d0\u00b7\u5c3c\u4e9a\u5b5c)\u00a0was also sentenced to fifteen years in prison for ”endangering state security” by talking to Asia Weekly\u00a0<\/em>(\u4e9e\u6d32\u9031\u520a)<\/a>.<\/p>\n
