”Chinese literature” is the theme of this book as it seems, but Alexander Wylie (\u4f1f\u70c8\u4e9a\u529b 1815\u20131887) had a rather wide definition of literature. The book of today, <\/span>Notes on Chinese literature: with introductory remarks on the progressive advancement of the art and a list of translations from the Chinese into <\/i>variou<\/i><\/span>s <\/em><\/span>Europ<\/i>ean languages<\/em> (\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u732e\u5f55), has four sections, the first dealing with ”Chinese classics” as <\/span>Yijing <\/em>\u6613\u7ecf<\/span> (I-ching), Shijing<\/em> \u8bd7\u7ecf (Odes<\/em> or Poetry<\/em>) etc. The second section deals with historical writings, documents, geography, and so on, and the third section is about philosophy, religion, astronomy, but also a text like Sunzi’s Art of War<\/em> \u5b59\u5b50\u5175\u6cd5. Only the fourth section deals with what we would today more clearly define as literature, e.g. the poetry of Li Bai \u674e\u767d (701-762), Su Shi \u82cf\u8f7c (Su Dongpo \u82cf\u4e1c\u5761, 1037\u20131101) and Xie Lingyun \u8c22\u7075\u8fd0 (385\u2013433), a famous Southern & Northern dynasties \u5357\u5317\u671d (420-589) nature poet, writing in the style of the Six Dynasties \u516d\u671d (220\u2013589). This section also mentions the well-known Neo-Confucian scholar Lu Jiuyuan \u9678\u4e5d\u6df5 (\u8c61\u5c71\u5148\u751f 1139\u20131192).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wylie uses the peculiar spelling Taouism for what was most often transcribed as Taoism, with pinyin Daoism \u9053\u6559. On this page Wylie also discusses the notion of Daojia<\/em> \u9053\u5bb6 and to how to classify texts associated with it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Alexander Wylie was a missionary for London Missionary Society (LMS), and from 1846 managed the LMS Press in Shanghai. Wylie had taught himself Chinese to begin with, and was noticed by James Legge who recruited him for the job in Shanghai. Wylie later also became an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society in China, and travelled much around China. He took part in translating Bible parts into Chinese, but also worked with Li Shanlan \u674e\u5584\u5170 (1810 \u2013 1882<\/span>)<\/a>, prominent Chinese mathematician, to translate mathematical works into Chinese. Wylie already in 1853 summarised what he had learned about Chinese science in his work Jottings on the Science of the Chinese<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
