Most of you who read my calendar posts probably know what pinyin<\/em> is, the major current transcription system for Chinese characters (if you don’t know follow the link<\/a>). But have you heard of \u6c5f\u82cf\u65b0\u5b57\u6bcd ”Jiangsu New Letters”? Probably not, I hadn’t. But I found this remarkable little book by Zhu Wenxiong \u6731\u6587\u718a (1883\u20131961), famous linguist and language reformer. While studying at University of Tsukuba \u7b51\u6ce2\u5927\u5b66 in Japan in 1906 he published this little book, bearing the title ”Jiangsu New Letters”. Our copy is a reprint from 1957, published by the \u6587\u5b57\u6539\u9769\u51fa\u7248\u793e ”Character Reform Press”. The first official pinyin <\/em>draft was published in 1956, approved in 1958, and in-between a whole series of historical material on spelling, transcription and characters was published \u62fc\u97f3\u6587\u5b57\u53f2\u6599\u53e2\u66f8 (Series of Historical Materials on Spelling and Characters).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zhu Wenxiong was part of the so-called \u5207\u97f3\u5b57\u8fd0\u52a8<\/a>, roughly meaning ”Spelling movement”, but where \u5207\u97f3 qieyin<\/em> is not really spelling but a method of indicating the pronunciation of a character by two others. This is done by using the initial sound of the first character and the final sound of the second character. Zhu Wenxiong supported using the Latin alphabet<\/a>, and in 1906 took his native Suzhou dialect \u82cf\u5dde\u8bdd (sub group of Wu Chinese \u5434\u8bed which includes Shanghai dialect) as example for his spelling proposal. Suzhou is in Jiangsu province, thereby the title of the book. In the 1930s a predecessor of the current pinyin<\/em> system called ”Latinxua Sin Wenz” \u62c9\u4e01\u5316\u65b0\u6587\u5b57 was promoted primarily by the Communist party, but also had supporters as Cai Yuanpei \u8521\u5143\u57f9 (1868\u20131940), President of Peking University \u5317\u4eac\u5927\u5b66and founder of Academia Sinica \u4e2d\u592e\u7814\u7a76\u9662, and Lu Xun \u9c81\u8fc5 (1881-1936), one of the foremost modern Chinese writers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
